Free Family Events in the Piedmont Triad

Today is the start of the Arts on Sunday Festival in downtown Winston-Salem.  Every Sunday in September, enjoy arts, crafts, and music on N Liberty St in downtown Winston-Salem.
Later this evening, you can enjoy concert band music by the Winston-Salem Community Band Concert or jazz at LeBauer Park.

Next Saturday, September 8, there are twelve free family events listed on our calendar!  NC Folkfest is a weekend of fun in Greensboro, the 14th Festival of Books & Authors takes place throughout downtown Winston-Salem, the 3rd Annual Hi-Fest will be at the Mendenhall Transportation Terminal in High Point, and Kernersville is celebrating the Annual End of Summer Fest.

These events and many others for you to enjoy with your family without spending a penny.  Of course, most of these events will have food and other items for sale, but you can have a lot of fun for free!

Suzie's Pride Inc. is a Sanctuary and Rescue for big cats. We are a no-kill, no-breed facility for unwanted, abused and neglected big cats from private owners, commercial entities, zoos and other sanctuaries. We provide cats with a place to live out their days in a compassionate respectful environment; we give them proper care enabling them to have a good quality of life.  Come join them for their monthly open house event!  (Located outside of the Piedmont Triad, about an hour from Winston-Salem)

South University Opens Campus in High Point


There's a new University in the Piedmont Triad!  South University, with nearly 25,000 students enrolled throughout their eleven campuses, has opened it's doors in the Premier Center business park, just off of Highway 68.  There are seven different programs available, with associates, bachelors and masters degrees.

High Point, N.C. (Sept. 17, 2012) – South University today announced its expansion into the Piedmont Triad with the addition of a new campus in High Point. With classes starting in January 2013, the newly constructed campus comprises more than 40,000 square feet of classrooms, labs, a library and office space. It is conveniently located just south of the intersection of I-40 and N.C. 68, at 3975 Premier Drive, High Point, N.C., 27265.
The campus can accommodate nearly 1,000 students with space to expand. Financial aid is available to students who qualify.
“We are proud to bring South University’s tradition of academic excellence to the Piedmont Triad, an area that values higher education and the benefits it can bring to students and the community as a whole,” said John T. South, III, Chancellor of South University. “Our new campus will provide area residents with opportunities to help them achieve their personal and academic goals.”
Initially, South University’s High Point campus will offer the following programs:
“Our dedicated faculty and supportive small-campus culture will help guide students to an education that will allow them to compete in today’s job market,” said Michael Trembley, president of the new campus. “Our programs are designed to graduate students who possess the professional skills that sought by employers in the region, and we look forward to partnering with employers to provide quality learning experiences for our students.”

Winston-Salem-- Native American Family Day at Museum of Anthropology,  1834 Reynolda Road.  Native American dancing, crafts, and food.  Admission is free, and free parking is available.

High Point-- Spider Discovery Hike at the Piedmont Environmental Center.  8am-10:30am.  Morning hike in search of spiders and their habitats.  Free and open to the public.  
There will also be a Bats and Bugs Night Hike at the Piedmont Environmental Center from 8pm-10:30pm.  Free and open to the public, great for families!

High Point-- Ilderton's High Point Beach Music continues... this week's band is The Craig Woolard Band.  See the previous two Thursdays for details.

Greensboro-- Fitness by the Fountain in Center City Park 100 North Elm Street from 6:30pm-7:30pm.  This is a free event for the family, with no prior experience necessary!  Just bring yourself, comfortable clothes, and a water bottle.  This event runs every Monday through October, and this week's class will be The Masala Bhangra Workout with  Cortney H. Wilson.

High Point-- Messy Morning is a morning of artistic expression at From Art to Zebras from 10:00am-11:00am.  Located at 3700 N. Main St. Ste 111.  Drawing, painting and sculpting with a Johnny Appleseed theme!  Cost is only $9.00/child or $15.00/family.

9/11 Saturday

High Point--Covenant Church at 1526 Skeet Club Road in High Point is holding their Fall Festival on Saturday, September 11 from 7:00am-5:00pm.  There will be BBQ chicken & pork, games, a bake sale, an auction, bands, and a yard sale.  They will also be honoring local heroes.You can rent a space for the yard sale for only $20, or a table for $5.  For more information about renting a space, click here.

Mayodan-- Mayodan is celebrating their homecoming with a street festival featuring live entertainment, arts and crafts, kid's rides and activities and more!  This a free event for the family, and will be held in Downtown Mayodan from 8:00am-10:00pm.  The Holiday Band of Burlington will perform beach and shagging music beginning at 8:00pm.  In case of rain, the show will be at the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Center.  You can become a Facebook fan here.

Denton-- The Denton Street Festival will feature food, crafts, games, music, and more from 9:00am-4:00pm at the corner of North Main Street and Salisbury Street.

Winston-Salem-- Bookmarks Festival of Books will have is in the Downtown Arts District from 10:00am-5pm.  This is a free event with lots of creative and interactive activities for the whole family!

Winston-Salem-- Old Salem is having a Criterium Bike Race and Community Day, with races starting at 9:00am.  There is also a Euro-Classica Car Show beginning at 11:00am on Old Salem Road.  Both of these events are free and  entrance to the historic buildings is free as well.

Kernersville-- KPRD is having a free kick-off event for their new Zumba class from 11:00am-12:00pm.  There will also be a drawing for giveaways.  See here for more information.   

Lewisville-- "Children of Eden" finishes it's run in Shallowford Square.  See Thursday for more details. 

Mocksville--  Beach Night at Junker's Mill 7:00pm-11:00pm at 105 South Salisbury Street, downtown Mocksville.  Featuring live music by Part Time Party Band and The Fantastic Shakers. Bring your lawn chair.

9/9 Thursday

Ilderton's High Point Beach Blast begins this Thursday, September 9 and will run every Thursday this month!  This program is presented by the Children's Home Society of NC.  This week features Carolina Beach music by Chairmen of the Board.  The concert begins at 5:30pm in Uptowne High Point at 1525 North Main Street.  Tickets are just $5.00 (ages 12 and under admitted free)!

Winston-Salem--   Bethabara Concert Band and Family Night  5:30pm-8:30pm.  Bring the family, bring a blanket and a picnic.  Hay wagon rides, games, and more!

Lewisville--  West Side Civic Theatre presents the musical "Children of Eden" in  Shallowford Square.  The show starts at 8:00pm and is free to the public, with concessions available.  The musical runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  See here  for more details.
